Tackling Taranaki

Photos taken and edited by Kahvi Patel
Mt. Taranaki
Last weekend, we climbed Mt. Taranaki. It took us about 9 hours to get to the 2500m peak, though we could feel it in our legs for the next few days!
We were mostly immersed in clouds on the way up... so much for the view!

The Froot Loops flower.
On our way up the mountain, Satish stopped, claiming that he could smell Froot Loops. We tried to find the source of the smell and we discovered that this little white flower was it!

The loose rock and sand in this photo was definitely the hardest part, as you slide back a foot every few steps. Two steps forward, one step backward.  Quite the scramble!
Maya and Rupa slowly falling behind...

There was quite a bit of snow once we reached the summit! (Probably not near as much as there is back home...).  Walking along the snow in the crater!

Above the clouds at 2500ft.  Made it it to the summit!

Tish was an awesome hiker, never complaining and easily managing the climb.  Surely one of the youngest to summit Mount Taranaki. Wow!

Hobbiton : Home of the Hobbits!

The "Hobbiton" set from the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings movies was situated on a large farm in the middle of nowhere. This included Bilbo/Frodo Baggins' house and the Green Dragon Inn.

The extras in the movies were only allowed to be under 5"2, and needed to have round faces. Only about 250 of 800 were chosen!

This ladder was really only a few feet tall

Stopped in the Green Dragon Inn for some ginger beers!

This tree is actually 100% artificial!

Satish in traditional Hobbit garb.

Some of the chimneys even had smoke coming out of them!

Opunake Beach

To break up the five-hour drive from Wellington, we stopped at Opunake beach.
Sunset makes for good photos!

Despite the campsites nearby, the beach was almost empty.

Maya and Satish enjoyed cooling off in the cool ocean.
